Winter is still here

Winter is still in  Lake Tahoe, NV in April, 2005

More often than not, I hear people complaining about the snow. “When is it going to stop?” “The groundhog predicted an early spring!”  Do people really believe an animal can predict the weather? Winter is still here, and Spring comes when it comes. And we’ve already had some springlike days – got up in the 60’s last week. Though today – it is snowing again with high’s in the low 30’s.

But really, we haven’t had a bad winter this year. It was much colder over the last couple of years, and we definitely haven’t had as much snow. Erie county got significantly more than Crawford county. And Lake Erie never froze over, so the lake effect snows just kept on piling on – even near the lake shore, where it’s usually not as bad.

So what are some fun family activities to do in the winter time here in NW PA. My church, New Beginnings Church of God, hosts a bi-annual carnival (January & July) with free activities – games, petting zoo, ice skating rink, sledding hill, horse wagon rides, live music, etc.

There are several places around the county that provide big sled riding hills. The only problem is that you have to walk back up, in order to enjoy the ride down.

Unless you go to Avalanche Express which is a tubing run. They use the Whispering Pines golf course, hole #18, and have a pulley system that you connect to your tube, and you just stay seated and it pulls you up the hill.

Meadville’s Recreation Center has an ice skating rink – indoors and is used 8-9 months out of the year for lessons and hockey games.

And they also have an indoor swimming pool which offers lessons, water aerobic classes, water walking, or open swim times.

There’s also a swimming pool at the local YMCA with the water temp around 85 degrees. The Y also has an exercise room and a game room.

If you love ice fishing, Conneaut Lake and Woodcock did freeze this year for fishing.  I think they have to wait for the ice to be @6 inches thick before going out on it – or maybe it’s even thicker than that.

And there are several family fun places in Erie County as well. There’s not only a YMCA, but Splash Lagoon which is an indoor water park. If you like putt-putt, there’s an indoor glow in the dark place called Play Port on 12th St  and lots of fun and games at the Chuck E Cheese’s near Sam’s Club off of Peach St.

Or just stay inside and grab a blanket and a hot cocoa and watch a favorite movie or read a book. Spring will be here eventually – but even here in NW PA, we can still get snow flurries into May, or have chilly nights during the summer. We’re cold lovers.

Until next time…
